Gallery: BMW Rolls back the years at March Motor Works

18th September 2021
Laura Thomson

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Goodwood Revival is a car dealership and workshop; a veritable glimpse into a vintage life away from the fast pace of the racetrack. This is the March Motor Works.

A Rolls Royce as big as your average house takes pride of place, while juxtaposed starkly alongside are a quartet of pastel-coloured Minis. Adjacent, a pair of BMW 700s are undergoing repairs; one a fully race spec’d model, while the second – which bears the Belgian flag and the familiar badge of J. Ickx – is in a more relaxed guise. Period paraphernalia lines the wall, a true time warp through to a busy garage of the era.

The front lawn is reserved for the more unusual – a BMW 300 Isetta sits alongside a Barchetta built by ‘60s BMW tuning specialists Martini, while an eclectic crowded of well-dressed individuals loiter with intent.

Around the corner, the two-wheeled aficionados are catered for, with not one but seven of the Bayerische Motoren Werke’s finest machines on display, all finished in the archetypal gloss black, with hand painted pinstripes and shiny roundels.

Five port a fine pair of protruding cylinders, while the others model humble singles, but are nonetheless equally impressive. Nearby, a dissected engine awaits repair on a rusty old workbench, embodying the Goodwood spirit of ‘Revive and Thrive’.
