Celebrating The Italian Job’s 50th anniversary at the Revival

Visitors to the 2019 Goodwood Revival will find half of the Earls Court Motor Show presented by Sky Cinema dedicated to one of the classic films of the 1960s. The Italian Job celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and the exhibition space celebrates the heist caper from start to finish.

You’ll find scenes and details from throughout the film, from the digger used in the opening sequence to the coach from the literal cliffhanger ending.

Of course the stars of the show are the three Minis, and there’s two sets of them on display. There’s a static display of the red, white, and blue cars, but also three that move through the area as in the film’s memorable chase sequence – dashing down the arcades of Turin where Arthur (Michael Standing) grabs some chicken from a cafe patron.

It’s not just about the Minis though, as the area features several of the film’s featured vehicles. They include the crew’s Jaguar E-types and the Aston Martin DB4 Volante belonging to Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) that all meet their end courtesy of the aforementioned digger when Il Cosa Nostra discovers the group’s plans.

Those plans feature in an area near the entrance, with technical drawings of the streets and buildings the crew used to escape in the Minis. You’ll also find original scripts from the film here.

Filling a large part of the display is the Harrington Legionnaire coach from the film’s final sequence. When driver Big William (Harry Laird) loses control of the bus on the Alpine passes and leaves it teetering over the edge with the stolen gold out of reach, Croker has the famous “great idea”. You can head inside the coach on display and have your photograph taken with the pallet.

There’s other vehicles from the film, too. Inside you’ll find the Land Rovers used in the heist itself, along with the bullion van. Outside you can see the minibus that the gang, disguised as England football fans, drive through the crowded city streets.

If you’re a fan of the Italian Job, you need to head to Earls Court Motor Show.
