There were some great results at the 2024 Goodwood Revival Bonhams|Cars sale, with some epic cars crossing the block to find new homes. From air-cooled Porsches, pre-war tourers and grand prix cars, let’s run through the big hitters of this year’s sale.
Firstly, that lead car. Every other 911 you see online these days is touted as ‘special’. But there are so many, you have to wonder at what point that word is overused. Not in this case. For this is – another overused word alert – unrepeatable, as the very last 911 powered by an air-cooled engine to roll off the Zuffenhausen production line, with a letter from Porsche confirming as much.
By the end of 1998, the water-cooled 996 was shortly to come on stream and usher in a new era but the 993 Turbo was still winding down the previous generation, of which this is the final example. And therefore, by default, it ended what was at the time a 35-year dynasty of air-cooled, rear-mounted engines.
It’s in simply immaculate condition, having covered less than 7,000 miles. It’s also a fairly special example beyond it being the last, with a ‘Turbo S’-spec 450PS (331kW) engine. It also has a plaque on its dashboard that reads ‘In Memoriam Prof Ferry Porsche’, given it left the factory on the same day – 27th March 1998 – as Ferry Porsche passed away. The buyer of the car was a friend of Porsche’s and as such, had the car dedicated to him. What a car it is.
If your taste is a little more ‘80s, the spectacular Porsche 911 Turbo Flat Nose, coming from a single family ownership from new, might be of interest. As should the 1987 Ford Sierra RS500, number 17 of the 500 made. Many in the GRR team fancy a few of the examples from the 2000s golden era of performance cars that are up for grabs, such as the Aston Martin DB7 GT Zagato, the Aston Martin Vanquish pairing, the DBS and the Ferrari F430 Coupe.
The 2024 Bonhams|Cars Goodwood Revival sale takes place on the Saturday of the event, with the automobilia crossing the block from 11:00 and the cars from 13:00.
