What do Mini Coopers and the Beatles have in common? Quite a lot, surprisingly, with the two set to feature in a ‘Swinging Sixties’ exhibit at Goodwood Revival this September 13 – 15.
As part of a display celebrating the iconic British hatchback’s 60 years of manufacturing, coachbuilt Mini Coopers previously owned by Beatles Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr will feature. In 1966, at the height of the Beatles fame, the band’s manager, Brian Epstein, gifted each member these Minis, customised by coachbuilders Radford and Hooper to suit their individual requirements. While Ringo’s hatchback was designed to accommodate his drum kit, George’s featured a ‘Tantric’ colour scheme.
Unfortunately, the Mini belonging to John Lennon won’t be on show, due to its whereabouts being unknown.
But standing in for Lennon’s Mini is a model once owned by television presenter Cilla Black, a fellow Liverpudlian and firm friend of the Fab Four. Black shared their manager, Brian Epstein, was signed to the same record label, Parlophone, and also recorded her early records at Abbey Road Studios with producer George Martin, just like the Beatles.
With less than four months to go until the annual celebration of all things vintage, it’s time to start planning your outfit. While anything from the 1948-66 era goes at the Revival, for those looking to make a special effort, this is the year to celebrate the style of the 60s, with Mary Quant and Twiggy (‘the Mini girl for the Mini generation’) both topical.
Tickets are still available for Friday and Sunday, so you too can step back into the Swinging Sixties.
