Video: 2024 St. Mary’s Trophy highlights | Goodwood Revival

08th September 2024

The St. Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul is our two-part saloon car extravaganza and returns in 2024 in 1960s format. This race has run every year here at Goodwood since the first Revival in 1998. As always, the star drivers will battle it out on the Saturday, before the owners of the cars take them back out on Sunday to round out the event, with the two finishes aggregating the final result.

2024 St. Mary’s Trophy Part 2 highlights

The penultimate race of the 2024 Revival was Part 2 of the St. Mary’s Trophy, where owners of the cars picked up where the VIPs left off on Saturday. Once again, it was a case of the Minis being bullied by the brutes in the field, none more so than Nick Swift in the Morris Mini Cooper S. He was practically barged into off the line as Bill Shepherd, taking over from Romain Dumas in the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 forced his way into the lead. Swift was also involved in a collision with Nigel Web, driving a 1960 Jaguar MkII which saw a piece of bodywork fly off onto the track. Web found himself sliding all over the place, Max Chilton lost his 1965 Lotus Cortina MkI in the grass, and there were incidents everywhere you looked.

In the end, Bill Shepherd held on to the lead, but only just. He was 0.673 seconds ahead of Chilton, with Gregor Fisken 15 seconds back in the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500. The St. Mary’s Trophy is decided by an aggregate result, and paired with a third-place finish in Part 1 Shepherd and Dumas took overall victory. The pairing of Frank Stippler and Alex Furiani in the 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA came second, followed by Fisken and partner Jimmie Johnson in third.

2024 St. Mary’s Trophy Part 1 highlights

The first part of the St. Mary’s Trophy was a highly-anticipated event in the Saturday schedule after Official Practice produced a condensed mid-field pack ready to battle. Pole-sitter Alex Buncombe had qualified with a substantial three-second gap over the rest, but in his Austin Mini Cooper S the question would be whether he could keep the big brutes behind him.

Once the race got underway the chaos wasn’t far behind. With wet conditions on track there was skidding and spins all over the place, duels between Jake Hill and Marino Franchitti, Andy Priaulx’s Ford Galaxie took a trip over the grass, and with some incredible recoveries and outrageous overtakes, Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy was one highlight clip after another.

And then there was Romain Dumas. Producing the performance of the race, Dumas climbed his way from the back of the grid to finish all the way up in third. A remarkable drive. Ultimately, it was Frank Stippler who claimed victory in the end, finishing three seconds clear of Jake Hill in second.

Official Practice for the St. Mary’s Trophy Part 1

The 20-minute Official Practice session set the grid for Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy, and it was Alex Buncombe in his Mini who made the best of the conditions to qualify on pole position for Saturday’s race.

He set a stunning lap time early in the session that proved to be the class of the field, seeing off the closest challenge of Steve Soper, also in a Mini, by three seconds. Frank Stippler rounded out the front row of the grid in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. Jake Hill in the Plymouth Barracuda was the fastest of the big-engined beasts in fourth, and he’ll be hoping to the minnows ahead for lunch when the flag drops.

In a star-studded field of current and former professional drivers, there are plenty of big names lower down the field who will be eyeing a big performance on Saturday. Jean-Eric Vergne just missed out on the top 15, with Christian Horner in 18th ahead of Matt Neal, Darren Turner and Jimmie Johnson. Gordon Shedden lines up 23rd, Andre Lotterer 26th and Jochen Mass 29th.

The midfield battle is set to be frantic, and we can’t wait to see these cars return to the Motor Circuit, hopefully in more favourable conditions.

Which cars are in the St. Mary’s Trophy?

As with a few other races at the Revival, we have in the past run the St. Mary’s as a one-make event. That’s relatively rare though, with the race usually alternating between 1950s and 1960s saloon cars. Last year we had ‘50s saloon cars so this year we’re back to the 1960s, and each car will run exclusively on sustainable fuel.

You can expect to see a grid featuring everything from the titanic Ford Galaxie 500 to the tiny Mini Cooper S, that could probably fit in the big Ford’s boot. In between, we’ll see Lotus Cortinas battling Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAs, Jaguar Mk2s and the Plymouth Barracuda.

Which drivers are in the St. Mary’s Trophy?

As above, the owners of the cars take to the track for the Part 2 closing race on Sunday, but Saturday’s line-up is always an all-star ensemble. From seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and reigning Festival of Speed Timed Shootout champion Romain Dumas both in Ford Galaxies to five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro, Formula E racer Jean-Eric Vergne, and Jochen Mass each in an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA.

Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner will be in a BMW 1800 TiSA, Alex Brundle will be behind the wheel of a Mini Cooper S, and they will be joined on the grid by a plethora of touring car stars past and present including Matt Neal, Jake Hill, Tom Ingram, Rob Huff, Andy Priaulx, Gordon Shedden, Andrew Jordan and Anthony Reid. With such a star-studded line-up we can’t wait to see how the race unfolds.
