2024 St Mary’s Trophy preview | Goodwood Revival
The St Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul is our two-part saloon car extravaganza and returns in 2024 in 1960s format. This race has run every year here at Goodwood since the first Revival in 1998. As always, the star drivers will battle it out on the Saturday, before the owners of the cars take them back out on Sunday to round out the event, with the two finishes aggregating the final result.
Which cars are in the St. Mary’s Trophy?
As with a few other races at the Revival, we have in the past run the St. Mary’s as a one-make event. That’s relatively rare though, with the race usually alternating between 1950s and 1960s saloon cars. Last year we had ‘50s saloon cars so this year we’re back to the 1960s, and each car will run exclusively on sustainable fuel.
You can expect to see a grid featuring everything from the titanic Ford Galaxie 500 to the tiny Mini Cooper S, that could probably fit in the big Ford’s boot. In between, we’ll see Lotus Cortinas battling Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAs, Jaguar Mk2s and lots more.
Which drivers are in the St. Mary’s Trophy?
As above, the owners of the cars take to the track for the Part 2 closing race on Sunday, but Saturday’s line-up is always an all-star ensemble. Last year we had NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button, nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen and three-time Le Mans winner Benoit Treluyer battling it out together.
It was an utterly spectacular sight and, if you haven’t seen it, no it wasn’t Jimmie in the giant T-Bird Ford. He was in an Austin A40 of all things. Because who needs their comfort zone, aye? We look forward to seeing what battles brew in this year’s lineup of cars and drivers.
When is the St. Mary’s Trophy?
Last year, Part 1 of the St. Mary’s Trophy was our lunchtime fixture on Saturday and the event’s final race on Sunday, with the owners racing into the dusk. Expect the same this year, though that will be confirmed when the timetable is released. Practice as ever takes place on Friday 6th September – at lunchtime for Part 1 and as the final session of the day for Part 2.
