A tribute to the Goodwood Nine Hour races of the 1950s, the Freddie March Memorial Trophy has featured at every Revival since 1998’s inaugural event. This year, it returns as the closing race of the schedule and, like the entire event, will run exclusively on sustainable fuel.

The Freddie March Memorial Trophy has spent some time as the opening race of the Revival as an hour-long, two-driver race. But, for 2024 it reverts to being a 25-minute sprint and with the sun setting on Sunday evening, promises to be a stunning conclusion to the weekend.

Revival-goers who waited until the curtain-call race were treated to a hotly contested battle at the sharp end of the grid. Jake Hill, fresh from his podium finish in the RAC TT Celebration earlier in the day, was campaigning hard in the HWM-Jaguar. Keeping him honest was Richard Woolmer in the HWM-Cadillac, who had previously captivated the crowd with his very sideways angle of attack aboard an Austin-Healey 3000 in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.

His exuberant driving style translated to the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, which ultimately contributed to his coming second rather than first. The cleaner – but still captivating – driving style of Hill proving to be the faster way around the circuit.

A mention for Bill Shepherd and his Ford Thunderbird ‘Battlebird’. He made an excellent get-away from the grid but soon succumbed to a mechanical problem that forced his retirement. The podium was completed by the Allard J2X who had led a pretty lonely race. For spectators the 2024 Goodwood Revival ended on a high with a close, memorable fight for the win.

Official Practice for the 2024 Freddie March Memorial Trophy

Like all of Friday’s Official Practice sessions, the outing for the Freddie March Memorial Trophy cars was wet. The conditions proved challenging for the entire field and, when the final reckoning came, it was BTCC racer Jake Hill who claimed pole aboard the HWM-Jaguar. In second is Richard Woolmer’s HWM-Cadillac, and they’re joined on the front row by Scott Malvern’s Allard J2X. Just behind is the very sideways Jaguar C-type of Tiff Needell.

Which cars are racing in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy?

As a tribute to the Goodwood Nine Hour races held in 1952, ’53 and ’55, you can see Frazer Nash Le Mans Replicas, HWMs, the memorable Ford Thunderbird ‘Battlebird’ and a gorgeous Ferrari 750 Monza all in action.

Of course, there will also be Aston Martin DB3Ss taking to the circuit; all three of the Goodwood Nine Hour races were won by Astons – the DB3 in 1952 and the DB3S in both 1953 and ’55.

Which drivers are in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy?

In the final race of Revival you can see the likes of Tiff Needell at the wheel of a Jaguar C-type. He'll be joined by one of the serial winners of the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, Gary Pearson, who most recently won in 2019 as well as in 2001, and took victory in the first two runnings of this race back in 1998 and 1999 in a Jaguar C-type. He returns to the C-type in 2024 as he vies for his fifth triumph.

Other previous winners competing this year include 2018’s victor Martin Hunt in a HWM-Jaguar alongside Richard Woolmer in a HWM-Cadillac, just as he was when he won in 2016.

When is the Freddie March Memorial Trophy?

Official Practice for the Freddie March Memorial Trophy takes place on Friday 6th September, before running as the final race of the Revival on Sunday 8th. You can find the exact timings for the Freddie March Memorial Trophy in the 2024 Revival timetable
