Video: XPeng G6 makes its UK debut on the Goodwood Hill

A bit about the G6: it has SUV practicality but with a sloping roof that means it’s a lot more stylish than your regular boxy offroader. Much like Hyundai and Kia did a few decades ago, XPeng hopes to carve its own foothold in the market by offering a very well-specified car for much less than a rival model from its European competition.

The standard equipment list is generous and includes electrically adjustable, heated, and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic glass roof, Dolby Atmos stereo, and 20-inch alloy wheels. The car’s battery tech, meanwhile, is some of the best currently available in the segment, with the car capable of a range of up to 354 miles between charges, and a 10-80 per cent charge takes 20 minutes at 280kW charging speeds. 

It  would be wrong to think of the XPeng as a budget brand. In many ways, the G6 feels like a car that’s been built based on a century of experience in the car industry, not just a decade. 

As the 476PS (350kW) AWD Performance model demonstrated on Goodwood Hill, the G6 is not short of performance, getting from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds. It dispatched the hill with very little drama, staying surprisingly upright through the fast bends, with only the slightest pitch under braking to hint at its near 2.2-tonne weight.
