On paper we were very well aware just how quick Smalley was before the 2022 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard weekend, being a BRDC Rising Star, 2018 Ginetta Junior champion, 2019 Ginetta GT5 runner-up, 2021 Ginetta GT4 Supercup champion and now Porsche junior. Still, you never expect to see someone do a wheelie in front of Goodwood House, or see someone run with two wheels on the grass going towards the Flint Wall and not lift. As runs in the Timed Shootout go, this was pretty special.
The onboard footage, cut together with a few lairy moments from the outside cameras, is heroic. There’s oversteer on the exit of the first corner, there’s oversteer from turn two, no chance of a lift going airborne in front of the House, and the braking down into Molecomb is just perfect. The exit is where Smalley looks to lose time, with a huge armful of opposite lock on the exit, but it’s a ten out of ten for us on style, refusing to back out of the throttle even with both right-hand wheels on the grass. How he managed to keep traction is beyond us. The rest of the run is just as dynamic, Smalley firing his way past the straw bales all the way to the line. We’ve watched this about five times in succession now and it doesn’t get old. Bravo Smalley, bravo.
