But before we got to the King of the Mountain, there was so much else to take in. The third day of the Festival of Speed got started with the running of the batch honouring Drift, Joest, Mercedes-Benz and Niki Lauda up the Hill, followed by one of ‘Horseless to Hybrid’ theme batches showing the progression of our favourite machines specifically in this batch from 1970 all the way to the present day.
And speaking of the present day, the very latest cars and bikes were on show, running up the Hill as part of First Glance presented by heycar, joined by some of the flashiest and fastest of the Supercar run. Then, gearing us up for the much-anticipated Balcony moment, we got to see the batch of Isle of Man TT bikes, dirt bikes, and F1 cars make their way up the Hill, before the great man himself made the climb.
Dunlop raced up the Hill on the very bike he broke the IOM record on and waved to the enormous crowds which had gathered to congratulate him on his way down. As he took in the deserved applause on the Balcony, his love of the sport plain to see in what was truly a highlight of the Festival.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, there was still the whole afternoon to enjoy, which included another chance to see some of the batches run from earlier in the day, as well as the MG Celebration Moment, and the qualifying rounds of the Timed Shootout. There was also a moment to remember the life of Gil de Ferran, two-time CART champion and 2003 Indy 500 winner who sadly passed away in December last year. A gathering of his family and fellow racers took place in the Assembly Area before his Indy 500-winning car took to the hill, and after we heard from friend and rival Dario Franchitti in what was a poignant reflection of a much-missed racer.
Saturday was truly a day to celebrate some of the greats of the racing community and motorsport’s past, present, and exciting future full of innovation. Lucky for us, this full day stream covers all nine and a half hours of action, so whether you’re looking to refresh your memory or watch for the first time, just press play and you’ll be entirely immersed in Day 3 at the 2024 Festival of Speed.
