Happily if you’ve yet to get up close and personal with a Tesla Cybertruck, this weekend's 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard has provided the opportunity...
Yes, the low-poly truck everyone loves to hate is on the ground at the Goodwood Estate as part of First Glance presented by heycar.
Amid quite a number of similar looking electric SUVs and crossovers, there's no doubting the Cybertruck looks distinctive on the Hill. Whether its straight-edged appearance is different in a good way is another question, however.
So, why aren’t they over here en masse yet? Well, like many other American pickup trucks, it wouldn’t have a hope of passing safety tests, particularly of the pedestrian variety. So the likelihood of it ever making its way to hopeful UK and European buyers anytime soon – at least legitimately or directly via Tesla – is low and remains low. A few will, we’re sure, but they’ll be vanishingly rare, like Mustangs and Corvettes used to be.
That’s sort of a shame. Because in spite of it being to pedestrian safety what an Aston Martin Valkyrie is to practical family motoring, it does feature a number of interesting innovations. And no, we’re not talking about the bodywork.
Importantly, it’s the first production car to use a 48-volt base electrical architecture. That means less wiring, less weight and more efficiency. It also uses a steer-by-wire system which helps in terms of response, manoeuvrability and adaptability.
Expect to see some of this stuff in Teslas you can buy before the end of the decade. But for now you can quench your thirst for outlandish design choices with this Tesla you can’t buy at the 2024 Festival of Speed.
The 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from the 11th-14th July, and you can watch every moment of the action on our live stream right here on GRR!
