New Range Rover Sport arrives at Goodwood

Making its public debut at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the third-generation Range Rover Sport from Jaguar Land Rover signals a new beginning for the marque. Its plug-in hybrid technology, optimised for efficient and all-electric (EV) driving, is a prelude to a fully electric Range Rover Sport that we can expect to see from 2024.

For now, it’s the plug-in hybrid that is enjoying the limelight, and given the success of the previous two Range Rover Sport models – almost as common on the roads as cat’s eyes – this third generation is a hugely important launch for the brand.

Confidently described by Jaguar Land Rover as the “most desirable, technologically advanced and capable” version yet, the new Range Rover Sport deploys either a 446PS (333kW) or 517PS (386kw) 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine and 38.2kWh battery, with an electric range of up to 70 miles. The 510e engine is able to reach a top speed of 150mph, accelerating from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds with a pulling power of 700Nm (518lb ft) of torque. For fans of noise, however, it is worth noting you can opt for the BMW-sourced 530PS (389kW) 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8…

Despite a 75mm increase in wheelbase the new Sport is described as being much stiffer and sportier than previous iterations, a dynamic air suspension system featuring twin air chambers reduces the pitch and roll that is commonly experienced in large SUVs. The intelligent system enhances the bandwidth of the suspension by varying the pressure within the chambers to deliver luxurious comfort without compromising dynamic performance. To further optimise this smart suspension response, Range Rover Sport is able to monitor the road ahead using its eHorizon navigation system to pre-emptively prime the large yet sophisticated Sport for upcoming bends.

An all-new interior, featuring a new cockpit-like interpretation of the trademark ‘Range Rover Command Driving Position’ bristles with the latest conveniences and driver assistance technologies, making the cabin a welcoming and comfortable place to be. Both on and off-road.

Billed as “the embodiment of SUV sporting luxury”, The new Range Rover Sport will be available for the road from £79,125. A rise on its outgoing older brother, with more expensive packages stacking on top of that.
