MG is making the most of its four days in the spotlight here at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. We’re barely four hours into day one and we’ve already had an exciting debut of the MG Cyber GTS, a concept car for now, but what we’re expecting will become a coupé version of the Cyberster that made its debut at Goodwood one year ago.
The MG’s performance proved to be as scintillating as it looks, judging by the car's tyre-shredding antics off the line and the impressively long tyre marks it left in its wake. In the corners, meanwhile, the GTS looks enticingly playful, wagging its tail on more than one occasion.
It's good to see cars like this arriving on the scene, good fun EVs that are going to start raising eyebrows and gathering the interest of drivers who are looking for a bit of enjoyment on the road.
Little is known about how this new coupé could take shape, but it is possible that both the single-motor and dual-motor electric powertrains from the Cyberster could be carried over to the GTS.
We do know that any coupé model will offer 2+2 seating along with the normal rigidity bonuses we’ve come to expect from the addition of a roof.
Early indications suggest the Cyber GTS could make it to production in 2025, which would conveniently mark the 60th anniversary of the MGB GT, and all signs are suggesting that this is exactly what MG wants to do.
For the time being, though, we’ll have to make do with seeing it in action on the Goodwood Hill over the course of the Festival of Speed, and we think it looks fantastic. All of the recognisable Cyberster features have been carried over, the front end is still aggressive, and the distinct rear lights are definitely growing on us, but MG has done a great job of implementing the coupé roof.
