A stunning and rare Swiss-built 1972 Monteverdi 375L took the prestigious Best of Show prize at this year’s Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ Concours d’Elegance at last weekend’s 25th Anniversary Goodwood Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard.
The luxurious and elegant Chrysler V8-powered 2+2 GT model in Peter Monteverdi’s ‘High Speed’ range of exclusive and expensive coupes, the 375L was styled and partially built by Carrozzeria Fissore in Turin, before being sent on to Monteverdi’s premises in Basle, Switzerland, for final assembly. Entered by long-term British owner Colin Mullan into the ‘Playboy’s Toys’ Concours class, the 375L was the first Monteverdi to ever grace the tranquil Cartier Lawn at Goodwood in the most hard-fought class of all this year.
The 2018 Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ saw a record eight individual vehicle classes, each one dedicated to a broad and eclectic mix of motor cars, ranging from pioneering Edwardian-era electric vehicles, via Ford Model Ts and a quartet of vehicle types marking their 70th anniversary, through to exotic sports cars and GTs of more recent times.
A distinguished panel of judges, all with a proven eye for detail and the finer things in life, faced the tough challenge of not only agreeing on a class winner for each of the eight 2018 Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ classes, but also the onerous task of having to choose the overall Best in Show winner.
The judges for 2018 Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ included leading Apple technology designer Sir Jonathan Ive, ballerina Dame Darcy Bussell, famed Italian automotive designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti, musician Nick Mason, fashion commentator Jack Guinness, London Fashion Week creator Caroline Rush, Lexus President Yoshihiro Sawa, fashion designer Patrick Grant, furniture designer The Earl of Snowden, young rally driver Catie Munnings and industrial designer Marc Newson.
