The Jaecoo J7 has made its UK debut at the 2024 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. It was your first chance to get up close and personal to the new Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque rival as it ran up the Goodwood Hill.
Featured in First Glance presented by heycar, the J7 blends the ruggedness of an off-roader with the sleek lines of an EV. Its large chrome grille hints at its premium status, while the interior design, reminiscent of an older Range Rover Evoque, is updated with the latest infotainment technology.
Looks can be deceiving though because the J7 isn’t an electric car. It’s available with either petrol or hybrid power. The latter is the most interesting because it has an electric-only range of nearly 100 miles, meaning the car should run purely on electricity almost all the time. It will also be rewardingly cheap to run if you can charge it at home.
Straight off the bat, though, expect the J7 to be offered with a 197PS (145kW) 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends power to the front wheels. Four-wheel drive will also be available, with the PHEV and a pure electric model joining the range sometime in the future.
Unusually for a modern SUV, the Jaecoo claims decent off-road credentials with a 600mm wading depth, drive select that includes modes for sand, mud and snow, and traction control system that can mimic a locking differential.
But the best news is the price; the J7 is expected to start from around £25,000 when it goes on sale in the UK in 2025.
