Video: Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster at the 2023 Festival of Speed
Two years after the Ineos Grenadier was on show at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster is making its global debut on the Hill.
Yes, it’s the pick-up version of the Grenadier, a rugged 4x4 designed to go pretty much anywhere but now with space in the back to carry a pallet full of whatever you might need.
Making its way up the Hill, its debut was anything but conventional, with heroic motorcycle trials world champion Dougie Lampkin riding alongside, mostly on just his rear wheel. From there a little demo of jumps and tricks began, including a series of donuts and a jump into the load bay of the Quartermaster. Dougie is certainly braver than we are…
The Quartermaster is a whopper of a machine, a double-cab Grenadier but with a box-section ladder chassis that’s been extended by 305mm. It has a towing capacity of 3,500kg, the same as the Station Wagon we saw at the Festival in 2021, but the rear cargo space can support a total of 760kg. In the back there’s also a 400W power output, while the tailgate can support 225kg. You and a couple of friends fancy sitting on the tailgate for a spot of lunch at the top of the Hill? No problem.
Although the Quartermaster took a fairly sedate trip up the hillclimb, with petrol or diesel power courtesy of a 3.0-litre turbocharged BMW straight-six engine under the bonnet it could have gone quite a bit faster. Good thing, then, that the Quartermaster makes use of Brembo brakes to scrub the speed off.
If you’re here at the Festival of Speed this weekend, this isn’t the only Grenadier on site, with an experimental BMW hydrogen powertrain-driven car running up the Hill. Let’s hope Dougie doesn’t try to jump over that as well.
