Video: Hongqi EH7 makes European debut at Festival of Speed

This family wagon has every right to look like a duck out of water on Goodwood Hill, but it rose to the occasion, delivering a formula-EV offering of breakneck acceleration and impressive grip, with a generous helping of body lean and weaving under braking. Both make it clear that a big (and very heavy) battery is nestled under the floor.

When the EH7 arrives in the UK, expect it to be offered with two or four-wheel drive, with the former handling the long-range side of things and the latter handling the performance end of the spectrum thanks to a 0-62mph time of just 3.5 seconds. The Hongqi also features clever kit like rear-wheel steering, air suspension and adjustable dampers.

You’ll likely be able to choose from three battery sizes – 75, 85 and 111kWh – offering a maximum range of more than 500 miles between charges.

Coming from the posher end of the EV market (you might know Hongqi from building China’s answer to the Rolls Royce Phantom), the EH7 features deeply padded seats, a 21-speaker stereo and a huge head-up display.

Prices are far from being confirmed by expect the Hongqi EH7 to significantly under established rivals like the Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback which starts from around £75,000.
