Every year without fail, the Goodwood House Central Feature becomes a defining part of the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. 2019’s masterpiece is no exception, and we believe, it might be the best one yet.
Designed by Gerry Judah, the sweeping white sculpture sat in front of Goodwood House celebrates 70 years of Aston Martin at Goodwood. It was seventy years ago in April 1949, that W.G. Bingley became the first person to race an Aston Martin at the famous Motor Circuit situated a stone’s throw down the road. An event which marked the start of a symbolic relationship between two great British institutions.
Fittingly crowned by one of the world’s most beautiful racing cars – the iconic Le Mans winning DBR1 – this year’s sculpture is elegant, dynamic and classic. Three words tailor made to describe the British marque.
Nodding to another wonderful connection, the DBR1 also happened to claim the World Sports Car Championship on a memorable afternoon at Goodwood 60 years ago, following a stunning comeback victory in the Tourist Trophy by Stirling Moss, Jack Fairman and Carroll Shelby. And looking up at the resplendent sculpture, you are almost transported back to those halcyon days once more.
Today, Aston Martin remains a major force in world motorsport, along with producing some of the fastest, most beautiful and desirable road cars available. Here’s to building special memories with Goodwood for many years to come.
