A 1995 Porsche 911 993 GT2 will be on sale at the Bonhams|Cars Festival of Speed Sale, carrying an estimate of between £1.1 million and £1.5 million. The Porsche is famous for boasting Ferrari F40-bothering performance in a package you could easily use daily, albeit with caution. The GT2 didn’t get the ‘Widowmaker’ nickname for nothing…
Talking about the GT2 in its September 1995 edition, Sports Car International magazine said:
"For the experienced driver, then, the GT2 is possibly the most exhilarating car on this side of a McLaren F1. It offers F40-style grunt in a completely civilised package, and like the F40 it's an intoxicating challenge to drive well on the limit. But while the Porsche 911 GT2 spits you down a road or a track as quickly as any enthusiast could wish, it's also docile enough for your grandmother to drive to the corner store..."
While that is a stretch for a 430PS (316kW) rear-wheel drive sportscar with no traction control, there's no denying the Porsche could stand up to the rigours of everyday use better than the famously patchy F40. Yet, only the McLaren F1 bettered the Porsche's 0-100mph time of 7.2 seconds, albeit vastly eclipsing its 187mph top speed.
Based on the 911 Turbo, the GT2 did without its four-wheel drive, sound deadening, and rear seats, while aluminium body panels and lightweight front seats meant it weighed 300kg less than the Turbo.
The car offered at the Bonhams|Cars Festival of Speed Sale was one of 17 delivered new to Japan, with a letter of confirmation documenting its Polar Silver Metallic, black leatherette bucket seats, and rare sports steering wheel taken from the GT1 race car.
It was imported to the UK by its current owner in 2020 and has 27 service book stamps documenting a mileage of just over 21,000 miles.
With just 172 road-going GT2s built, this is a rare opportunity to buy a low-mileage example of arguably the best Porsche made in the modern era.
The 2024 Festival of Speed takes place on 11th-14th July. Only Thursday general admission tickets remain, with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tickets now sold out, although a limited number of hospitality packages for all days are still available. Tickets and packages can be purchased from £70.
