It’s becoming a habit these days that Ferrari’s initial images and renderings of its latest models really don’t do the real thing justice. Never has that been more apparent than with the SP3 Daytona, the marque’s latest Icona limited-run model.
To be clear, the initial images of the SP3 Daytona showed a very attractive car. But here in the metal (or carbon) at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, resplendent in Giallo Modena, it’s a certifiable pinup.

Marrying contemporary Ferrari design language with 1960s sports prototype influences, the SP3 is to our eyes a near-perfect blend of past, present and future. The way that vent slides down into the door behind the front wheel arch is pure Ferrari 312P, as are the slats on the rear end which, we will admit, are the most polarising element of this car’s design. The classical elements are very deliberate, given the whole project and the Daytona name is a tribute to Ferrari’s 1-2-3 finish at the Daytona 24 Hours in 1967. That result was Ferrari’s revenge against Ford, for knocking off the top at Le Mans the year before.
It’s a looker for sure and the story it pays homage to is legend, but the specs are mouth-watering too. The SP3 has the honour of being the first non-hybrid mid-engined V12 from Ferrari in 20 years. That V12 is pretty special too, given it revs to 9,500rpm and produces 840PS (617kW). The thought of letting that off the chain up the FOS Hill is tantalising. Is this the coolest Ferrari at Goodwood this year?
