Performance Parking at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard is always a reassuring thing to walk around. It's a striking reminder each and every year that our most dedicated (and well-heeled) attendees have impeccable taste – they’re a bit of us. There’s also more than a bit of a tell-tail that friends of the event are here too.
Because we don’t think the ‘P1 OOW’ McLaren P1 is a privately owned vehicle. What certainly is a privately-owned vehicle, is the Gumball 3000-liveried Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with a roof box, its engine cover removed, a load of grime glazed across it and a plate that reads ‘R0T 80X’. Legend.
We also enjoy the presence of a Porsche 918 Spyder in the Martini Livery, a Lamborghini Murcielago SV, a Ferrari F12 TdF and a McLaren 765LT in a classic Marlboro livery.
A bit further down the performance spectrum, but no less cool, are a range of Holdens – Monaro and Maloo – present and correct, while 997 Porsches, E92 M3s Ferraris and VH-era Aston Martins (including a stunning Zagato shooting brake) flew the flag for the early 2000s golden era of natural aspiration. We include the Zag in that because that V12 is a child of that era.
And that was just Thursday. The line-up cars changes day to day and, while the rain came on Friday, it didn't put off Festival of Speed visitors from bringing their sports and supercars.
Braving the precipitation were hoards of luridly hued Lamborghinis. There were also Porsches by the dozen, from a classic Targa to the latest Stuttgart machines in the form of the 992 GT3 and Cayman GT4. There was also a few Taycans representing the EV future (well, present). And if you want an illustration of variety, how about an Morgan Aero rubbing shoulders with a Lexus IS-F. We also have to give a special mention to the Moke braving the elements.
Take a scroll through the gallery to see what else we spotted on our Friday stroll.
