What is more incredible to see than a Lotus 340R? Two Lotus 340Rs of course. And what is more incredible to see than two Lotus 340Rs? Three Lotus 340Rs of course. I’ll spare you the torture of this going on and on, and say that at 75th Anniversary Sunday Breakfast Club we had… Seven!
The 340R was a limited edition, super lightweight version of the Lotus Elise. Looking like someone had crossed the famous sportscar from Hethel with a Caterham and in many ways paying homage to the original Lotus Seven.
A 179PS (132kW), four-cylinder engine doesn’t sound that impressive, but the car weighed just 700kg so it would race to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. But the most arresting thing about the 340R is still the way it looks. With open wheels, shrouded only in cycle car-style wheel covers, a rear wing and a rear diffuser, you really cannot miss one.
At Breakfast Club, there we so many that it took a second glance to make sure your eyes weren’t having some kind of issue, and yes, there really were seven.
