Big, lovely, rumbly V8s – is there anything more American in existence? Think engines so lazy it sounds like you can hear each cylinder firing.
We’ve got some wonderful examples at Classic Car Sunday, from Corvette to Camaro, from Bell-Air to Trans-Am. Pretty much all of them powered by a languid, relaxed eight-cylinder motor.
There’s something about that sound that just brings images of the good ‘ol you ess of ay isn’t there? An image of old trucks cruising down dusty highways, of muscle cars ready for a quarter-mile drag. It’s as American as apple pie, if not even more so.
The lazy sounding V8 is on the way out, even in America. Even the F150 Raptor is powered by a V6. Modern realities mean that even the Camaro doesn’t have that low and slow sound in its signature. So, days like today are a perfect moment for a meander down memory lane.
