Your GSA stories: Robin Wills

It’s been fantastic to read all the stories behind the choices of names on the GSA plaques going up in the paddock and around the circuit.

One story that struck a chord with us recently was thanks to Robin Wills who upgraded to the GSA Paddock Club membership in honour of a late friend, Chris Winn. They both started their love for the Goodwood Motor Circuit in the 50s, during the era of the likes of Mike Hawthorn and Graham Hill.

Robin wrote to us to dedicate his paddock plaque to Chris: “I would love to get a photo of it to send to his pals,” he wrote, “Chris was well known and loved by so many of the original Goodwood crowd, and at the 2010 Festival of Speed, when the then-Lord March heard that he was on the way out, he kindly arranged for him to have breakfast on the house balcony. It was a very kind gesture, which Chris often spoke about until he died in January 2011.”

Both Chris and Robin shared many memories at Goodwood. One that’s still very vivid in Robin’s mind that they spoke of regularly was when Mike Hawthorn span out at Fordwater and overturned, chucking Mike out of the car and into the infield.

Goodwood had been such a large part of Chris’s life and remains so for Robin too. “Chris had a complete set of BARC badges covering all the events in the fifties and sixties and never missed a Festival of Speed or Goodwood Revival”. Robin is also able to attend many of the Goodwood motorsport events regularly as he only lives a short drive from the circuit.
